Grindstone~Lake Edna Larch Hike, ALW : Scott and I went hunting for larch trees on Sunday, with a forecast calling for 20% chance of rain. We decided, sort of at the last minute, to try for the summit of Grindstone Mountain at Chatter Creek off the Icicle River Road in Leavenworth.

The weather is absolutely miserable, and we forgo the summit in the clouds. But we find instead a gorgeous larch meadow walk, and make it to Lake Edna, where Scott surprises me by jumping in. Crazy guy.

We did around 6000 feet gain, and maybe 12 miles?? Not sure.

Thornton Lakes : September 7th. Went to Lower and upper Thornton Lakes. Upper had snow, and no fish. Lower had tons of fish at the outlet and around the south side.

To get to Upper, cross outlet (this can be harder earlier in season when logs are covered by water), go by campsites, turn left at sign to outhouse on a rough trail. Follow up and work your way up the ridge above the middle lake, and when you see the lower, work your way down on rocks and heather (careful walking). Can also follow this ridge all the way around towards Thornton Peak. Bring Ice Ax ~ there was a small snowfield we could see on Thornton Peak. There were a few (or at least one?) campsites above upper lake, exposed, didn't look like water real close by, nice views.

Mazama 2008 : August 8-10th. I met Martina, Phil, Jenny Fry, Jill, Larry, and Gena in Newhalem, where I left my car (thanks to security guard Michelle, thanks!) and tried to bike the whole trip to Mazama. I didn't make it. I died. It rained and thundered, and I quit just before Rainy Pass. Only Phil actually opted to go the whole way. Went hiking with the group (more joined us) the next day at Maple Pass Loop, 8 mile hike, then biked from there downhill to Mazama about 20 miles (so I did the whole bike ride except from Rainy to Washington Pass, which is probably the hardest part of the trip!). Hiked the next day with Scott and Doc (who met up with us Saturday night after doing Crater Mtn) up to Cuthroat Pass, another 12 mile hike.

Yellow Aster Butte : August 13-14, 4 BC (=4 months before Corinna): Jeff, Kim (with baby), Jake, Gypsy, Mocha, and I hike up the Yellow Aster Butte trail to camp in the beautiful tarns of the meadows on a hot and sunny weekend. Lots of snowy glacier views and crisp tarn water to cool us off though. Good times in the hills.

Leroy Creek High Route : Hiked the Leroy Creek High Route loop hike(15 miles?) October 21st, 2006 with Scott and John. Scott went up Mt. Maude too while I waited down below (I was just up there last year, and not as fast as Scott could go), and John turned and went up Mt. Carne and out the Carne trail. I later lost Scott on the trail running ahead, but luckily we all three eventually met up at the car!

There are a few movies of the scenery, and several at the end showing beta for the route (to help me remember for next time ~ I've done this how many times? Five? It's a favorite this time of year!). It is a bit tricky during parts where there are no trails or cairns.

(The movies just show up as thumbnails depending on the view, but they are movies, not pictures! Click on them to view).
